Welcome Message

Dear Authors and Supporters of ICEMS2020

With a close cooperation among the China Electrotechnical Society (CES), the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers Electrical Machinery and Energy Conversion Systems Society (KIEE-EMECS), the IEEE-Industry Applications Society (IEEE-IAS), and the IEEJ Industry Applications Society (IEEJ-IAS), we have been making great efforts to hold the 23rd International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems (ICEMS2020 Web Remote Conference), from November 24 to 27, 2020, at ACT CITY Congress Center, Hamamatsu, Japan. As a matter of fact, more than 600 one-page-digests have been submitted so far, which reveals remarkable attentions and expectations to the conference. However, we had to change our management of the conference to “web remote style” due to COVID-19 as everyone knows. It goes without saying that making this momentous and anguished decision was quite difficult and that the change is unfortunate for not only the host but also the participants from all over the world.

Here once again, we proudly make an announcement of ICEMS2020 Web Remote Conference. Although many of the social events have unfortunately been cancelled, we are now making preparation for the conference so that up to approximately 500 presentations can be made on the web video conferencing system including oral presentations and poster presentations. In addition, an opening ceremony, a paper prize award ceremony, and a closing ceremony are still held with the web video conferencing platform, expecting approximately 1,000 attendees.

Even though the conference style is changed to the web video conference, ICEMS2020 Web Remote Conference still has a technical co-sponsorship with the IEEE-IAS; hence, all papers presented at ICEMS2020 Web Remote Conference will be posted on the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. In addition, all of the papers are also eligible for paper review for possible publication in the IEEE Transactions or Magazine on Industry Applications as well as the IEEJ Journal on Industry Applications.

We hope that we will have fruitful achievement in the conference and that ICEMS2020 Web Remote Conference can indicate the direction of next generation standards for future international conferences. We are really looking forward to welcoming every one of you to ICEMS2020 Web Remote Conference and to seeing you in person on the web. Thank you for your understanding and for your significant contribution to ICEMS2020 Web Remote Conference.

Yours sincerely,

  • Katsumi Yamazaki (ICEMS2020 Organizing Committee Chair)
  • Hiroyuki Ohsaki (ICEMS2020 International Steering Committee Chair)
  • Toshihiko Noguchi (ICEMS2020 General Chair)
  • Shu Yamamoto (ICEMS2020 Technical Committee Chair)

Thank very much for attending the 23rd International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems (ICEMS2020). ICEMS started in China since 1987 and has been held 4 times in Japan in the past (2006 Nagasaki, 2009 Tokyo, 2012 Sapporo, and 2016 Chiba). This is the fifth time that the Institute of Electrical Engineers in Japan (IEEJ) organized ICEMS. This conference is co-organized by the KIEE Electrical Machinery and Energy Conversion Systems Society (KIEE-EMECS) and the China Electrotechnical Society (CES), and is also technically co-sponsored by the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IEEE-IAS).

In May 2020, according the pandemic of COVID-19, we discussed how to hold ICEMS2020 surely and safely, with the International Steering Committee of ICEMS. Finally, we decided to organize ICEMS2020 as an on-line conference. We never forget the kind suggestions and opinions at that time.

Now, ICEMS2020 is about to begin. We strongly believe, even the conference style has changed, ICEMS2020 will provide a big opportunity for researchers and professionals from all over the world, to present the latest researches and developments and to exchange useful information and experiences in the fields of electrical machines and systems, such as motor drive systems, turbine generators, linear machines, transformers, electric vehicles, renewable energy, power converters, etc.

I would like to extend a hearty welcome to all of you for participating the 23rd International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems (ICEMS 2020 – Hamamatsu).

An ICEMS conference is held every year in China, Korea, Japan and the fourth country in turn. This is the 23rd ICEMS conference and the 5th ICEMS organized by the Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan, the Industry Applications Society (IEEJ-IAS). The first ICEMS organized by the IEEJ-IAS was in Nagasaki in 2006, the second in Tokyo in 2009, the third in Sapporo in 2012, and the fourth in Makuhari, Chiba in 2016. Since then about four years have passed. The original plan of ICEMS 2020 was to hold the conference in Hamamatsu, Japan. But as you know well, there are still concerns about the spread of COVID-19 infection, and, therefore, we have decided to hold ICEMS 2020 as a virtual conference.

The ICEMS has contributed to the promotion of academic and technological exchange in the fields of electrical machines and systems, and also to the progress of the fields. In the conference we have participants in a wide age range from young students to senior professors and engineers. Especially we have many students of graduate schools. It would be very important for us to stimulate interest of the students and young professionals through the program of the conference and to develop engineers and leaders of the next generation. In the ICEMS conferences the international exchange, communication, and friendship are also very important. I expect that the ICEMS 2020 will contribute to enhance the international cooperation among the academic societies and to develop our friendship furthermore.

I do hope that the conference will be very fruitful for all of you and that you will enjoy the conference.

Welcome to the 23rd International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems (ICEMS2020). We initially planed this conference to hold at Hamamatsu, which is one of the heart cities of automotive industry in Japan. As everyone knows, however, COVID-19 unfortunately prevented us to achieve our goal. Hamamatsu was nominated as a conference site because our technical trend is accelerating towards electrification of vehicles, which matches ICEMS technical scope very well. In addition, this city has great reputation in Japanese automotive industrial history because Sakichi TOYODA (TOYOTA), Soichiro HONDA, Michio SUZUKI, and Torakusu YAMAHA, all legendary engineers were born or working in Hamamatsu area.

Even though the conference management has been switched to “web remote style,” I believe that the sprit of “YARAMAIKA!” (LET’S TRY IT! in a Hamamatsu dialect) is still alive in the heart of all the attendees of the conference. I really hope this conference can provide every participant with wonderful exchanges of the latest technologies and academic knowledge.

Enjoy the conference and YARAMAIKA! in electric machines and systems.

With a growing field of electrical machines and systems area, it is supposed to be more exciting and productive to have the 23rd ICEMS meeting in Japan this year. However, regrettably we cannot gather and share our achievement due to the outbreak of COVID-19 that is the event with serious impact we have not experienced ever.

Now everyone knows that world after COVID-19 must be totally different from that before COVID-19. Academic meetings are not an exception and rather a representative example of changing norm. Even though we cannot meet each other in the same place and time, fortunately we can exchange our experience and knowledge by virtue of the current communication technology. Despite many troubles caused by COVID-19, communication and friendship in our society should be continued.

Since the first conference was commenced, this meeting has become a fundamental ground to exchange quality results and ideas provided by the researchers and scientists within universities, industries and institutes under the close cooperation and collaboration among the China Electrotechnical Society (CES), the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers (KIEE), the IEEE-Industry Applications Society (IEEE-IAS), and the IEEJ Industry Applications Society (IEEJ-IAS). Hence, I strongly believe that the ICEMS 2020 will be also a great opportunity for everyone attending here to enrich their professional network.

Finally, we hope this virtual meeting becomes the meaningful beginning of the future that is much better than before. On behalf of KIEE Electrical Machinery and Energy Conversion Systems Society, co-organization of ICEMS, we thank you again for your commitment to ICEMS and its community, particularly during these difficult times. We hope this virtual meeting is enjoyable and informative to everyone and this field continues to progress.
