The Technical Committee on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation (TC-DEI) had the 200th anniversary of TC meeting in March 2011. TC-DEI was set up in 1979 upon the reorganization of IEEJ, succeeding the Permanent Committee on Electrical Insulating Materials started in 1971. It was renamed from TC-EI in 1990, aiming to expand its activity to the field of electronic and dielectric functional systems.
Activities of the TC have been covering mainly solid and composite dielectric materials and their related technologies. One important activity is to hold the annual domestic Symposium on Electrical and Electronic Insulating Materials and Applications in Systems (SEEIMAS), formerly called Symposium on Electrical Insulating Materials (SEIM). International Symposium on Electrical Insulating Materials (ISEIM) being also held, almost every three years.
The first symposium, held in 1968, was brought to fruition by the Investigation Committee for Research on Dielectrics and Conductive Characteristics. It takes on a more and more distinctly Japanese character, as evidenced by the following facts.
Though the symposium has developed and now has a long history, TC-DEI have also started to reorganize it since 2006. The aim is to promote the linkage between academia and industry, and encouraged the activity of young researchers. As a aresult, the number of participants has been increasing gradually since that time, and finally it has recovered to be the same level as the most active time. We also recognize that collaboration with Asian researchers is one of hot issues these days.
As a reflection of great demand from IEEE DEIS officers visited Japan for ICPADM 91 to make the domestic symposium to be international, TC-DEI hold the Joint Conference of 1993 International Workshop on Electrical Insulation and 25th SEIM in Nagoya in 1993. Based on this preparation we hold the 1st ISEIM in Tokyo in 1995. Through ISEIM it has been greatly promoted the stimulus information exchange among Japanese, Asian, Western, and African researchers and engineers in the field of electrical insulation technology and dielectric material properties. At the same time the ISEIM provided young researchers and students the opportunities to touch the international atmosphere of our society.
Recent ISEIM covers nanotechnology, asset management, HVDC technologies, numerical simulations, and so on to catch up with the new trend of electricity market.
Furthermore, the TC-DEI runs Investigation Committees (ICs) that organize several technical meetings a year. Their roles are:
Seminar for young researchers in the field of dielectrics and insulating materials has been also held for long time since 1971, which is three years after the first SEIM. The Technical Committee established the Seminar early on as a means of fostering the development of young talent. The planning and implementation of this seminar are carried out by the young researchers themselves. Graduate school students and young researchers from competing corporations got a first-hand experience of what it was like to discuss research themes as well as a glimpse of what their own futures might hold. To give young researchers a more international outlook, foreign researchers are sometimes invited.
