The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan
about the IEEJ President's Inaugural Address
Takashi Fujimoto, The 97th (FY 2010) Chairperson of IEEJ
It is my great honor to serve as the 97th president of the Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan, continuing to build on the proud history spanning more than 120 years that was achieved by our forefathers.

Over the years, IEEJiThe Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japanjhas contributed greatly to the development of scholarship and industry and also paved the way for the development and education of countless outstanding individuals in the field. On the other hand, expectations have suddenly increased for electricity-related technical progress as a way to achieve a low-carbon society. Thus, the environment in which the IEEJ operates is changing dramatically, and the IEEJ, which boasts a solid foundation and strong traditions, must be sensitive to the changes of the times, and respond quickly to those changes.

Against this backdrop, my aim is to continue to contribute to the education and scholarship of engineers by utilizing to the utmost the special characteristics of the IEEJ, which is involved in a wide range of fields, and by providing in a timely manner a forum for discussion and debate that transcends traditional boundaries. For example, I would like to see the establishment of a special research group on the Smart Grid that represents a cross-section of different IEEJ Societies, and widely publish the results of the group's activities through symposia and so forth. Additionally, I would like to see Japan's outstanding technology shared proactively with the world and establish stronger relations with electricity-related organizations overseas. Furthermore, I would like to enhance the presence of the IEEJ through specific progress in new endeavors, such as by boosting society's understanding of and interest in electricity through the "One Step on Electro-Technology" awards and "Electricity Month." I believe that these kinds of varied activities will increase membership, revitalize the Institute's activities and lead to the further base expansion and education of engineering-related individuals.

I aim to contribute to the development of the IEEJ to the best of my ability, and look forward to your continued cooperation and support.
