| The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan (IEEJ) is a science corporation of membership system with scholars and engineers, founded in 1888. It's the traditional society with long history more than one century, while it always looks for innovation and encourages enterprise activities. Its membership has exceeded 28,000 today. IEEJ got participation and support from various people not only students putting their heart into learning electrical science but also scholars and engineers in the forefront of universities and companies. As a result, IEEJ has brought a plenty of research publication, invention and discovery. We renovated the old organization in 1991 and adopted the formation of society system which could stimulate general activities of IEEJ and encourage their own speciality. The role of electrical engineering has been expanded by electrical science. The electrical engineering covers a wide area, such as electronics, information, energy, environment and so on. IEEJ makes our best efforts in contributing to social welfare through the activity of studies, researches and engineers of electrical science and through its presentation of results from an international point of view. |

Today, we are seeing swift and dynamic changes in every aspect of society. The IEEJ strongly feels the need to take leadership in international exchange on critical issues by leveraging its resources, expertise and experience.
As a first step, the IEEJ seeks to promote international cooperation by expanding its relations with scholars and electrical engineers in neighboring Asian and Oceanic nations, thereby leading to more active industrial links and invigoration of industries within the region.
Now, IEEJ is a scientific organization founded in 1888 and has approximately 27,000 members, mainly consisting of scholars and engineers in the fields of electrical engineering and electronics. Under participation and support of a broad spectrum of people representing the academic and corporate communities, the IEEJ carries out a wide range of activities including the publication of scientific journals and books, technical research and investigation and counterpart exchanges with similar organizations in other countries as well as with various international organizations.
In June 1997, the IEEJ established a committee to define its formal Principles of International Activities. The resulting principles, agreed upon and subsequently approved by the Executive Committee. The major principles can be summarized as follows:
The IEEJ will conduct its activities as an organization open to the international
community and support participating individuals in providing their outstanding
for society. The primary support activity is the development of international
information exchange networks, including the further recruitment of foreign
members and promotion of the Corresponding Membership. |

The Sensors and Micromachines Sub-Society in IEEJ covers three major research areas in sensors and MEMS (micro electromechanical systems) fields: (1) Physical sensors, (2) Chemical sensors and microsystems, and (3) MEMS and sensing systems. SAMS provides forum for researchers both in academics and industrial sectors who investigate various aspects on materials, fabrication processes and technologies, devices, design methodology, algorithms, and system synthesis related to those areas. This is the only academic society on sensors and MEMS in Japan. We publish Transactions monthly and organize many academic meetings from local to international level. For example, the Sensor Symposium sponsored by SAMS was established in 1980 and has attracted leading researchers in the fields. SAMS has hosted prestigious international meetings such as Transducers and MEMS Conferences when they are held in Japan. Papers published in the transactions and presented at meetings deal with the latest progress in state-of-the-art research topics; those include micromachine inertial sensors, intelligent sensors, advanced sensing algorithms, micro chemical systems, bio sensors, DNA chips, optical MEMS, power MEMS, NEMS (nano electromechanical systems), vacuum micro electronics and scanning probe microscopy. Applications of sensors and MEMS to automobiles, optical communication, information gathering and storage, environmental monitoring, entertainment and home appliances, medical and health care, IT'S (intelligent transportation systems) and industrial process instrumentation are also discussed.
